by Juan Gris
Juan Gris rendered this Landscape with House at Céret during his time in this southern French town, which attracted many Cubist artists. The composition breaks the hillside village into geometric planes, with buildings and foliage rendered as interlocking facets of color. Ochres, greens, and grays create a subdued Mediterranean palette.
Gris brought a more structured, classical approach to Cubism than Picasso or Braque. His landscapes from Céret show how he applied Synthetic Cubism's principles to traditional subject matter while maintaining legibility. This work remains in a private collection.
