by Léon Bonnat
Léon Bonnat completed this tender subject showing an Egyptian mother with her child, part of his interest in Orientalist themes. Bonnat was primarily a portrait painter who became one of the most sought-after artists in late 19th-century France, painting presidents, aristocrats, and cultural figures. His academic style combined careful draftsmanship with warm flesh tones.
The painting demonstrates Bonnat's ability to bring dignity to humble subjects while maintaining the academic polish expected of Salon painting. Women and children from exotic locales were popular subjects in 19th-century French art.
The work is now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Bonnat's influence extended through his teaching; his studio trained many prominent artists including Toulouse-Lautrec, Braque, and Dufy.
