Luca Signorelli painted the fresco between 1481 and 1485 in the Sacristy of St. John at the Basilica della Santa Casa in Loreto, Italy. The composition shows two apostles engaged in animated discussion, their gestures and expressions capturing the intensity of theological debate. This panel belongs to a larger program depicting five pairs of apostles on the upper walls of the octagonal sacristy.
The fresco cycle represents some of the earliest work in the basilica's lavish interior decoration. Signorelli painted the vault with eight spiral angel musicians, followed by the four Evangelists and Doctors of the Church in alternating segments. The walls feature scenes of the Conversion of Saint Paul and the Doubting of Saint Thomas alongside the apostle pairs.
Scholars detect the influence of Bramante, Perugino, and Andrea del Verrocchio in these frescoes. Some believe Signorelli completed them after his work on the Sistine Chapel around 1485. The Basilica della Santa Casa was built to enshrine what tradition held was the Virgin Mary's house, brought from the Holy Land by angels in the fourteenth century. The Renaissance portal of the sacristy, with its carved and inlaid woodwork, is attributed to Benedetto da Maiano.
