Luca Signorelli rendered this fresco between 1477 and 1482 for the Basilica della Santa Casa in Loreto. The scene captures the moment when Saul falls from his horse, struck blind by divine light on the road to Damascus. Surrounding figures react with amazement as the future apostle experiences his defining vision.
Pope Sixtus IV commissioned the work. Signorelli used dramatic chiaroscuro to emphasize the supernatural event, with precisely drawn figures demonstrating his training under Piero della Francesca. The fresco measures 238 x 200 cm and remains in its original location in the Renaissance shrine.
