by Otto Mueller
German painter Otto Mueller painted this scene of nude figures in nature around 1918-1920, showing two girls and a standing youth in a landscape setting. The work exemplifies Mueller's characteristic style: elongated forms, muted earth tones, and figures at ease in natural surroundings. His simplified shapes and matt surface give the painting a fresco-like quality.
Mueller was a member of Die Brücke, the German Expressionist group, though his work remained more lyrical than his colleagues'. His vision of figures in harmony with nature reflected both his artistic ideals and his personal identification with Roma culture. The work held in the Sammlung Karsch in Berlin, part of an important collection of German Expressionist art.
