Peder Severin Krøyer captured this intimate scene of Skagen fishermen resting in a general store. The men gather around tables and barrels, their weathered faces illuminated by soft natural light streaming through the window. Krøyer's loose brushwork conveys the relaxed atmosphere between fishing expeditions.
Krøyer was central to the Skagen artists' colony, a group of Scandinavian Impressionists who gathered in this remote Danish fishing village. His paintings of local fishermen became beloved images of Nordic coastal life. Now at the Hirschsprung Collection in Copenhagen.
