Pierre Puvis de Chavannes depicted autumn in his trademark muted palette and idealized classical style. The work shows allegorical figures representing the season in a simplified, decorative composition.
Puvis was famous for his large-scale murals and influenced many Symbolist and Post-Impressionist artists. This painting is at the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne.
