Piet Mondrian completed this Dutch landscape before developing his famous abstract style. A mature willow reflects in the still water of an irrigation ditch, the scene rendered with naturalistic attention to light and atmosphere. These early works show Mondrian's roots in Dutch landscape tradition.
Mondrian's evolution from representational landscapes to pure abstraction was gradual. He progressively simplified forms, eventually arriving at his signature grids of primary colors. This transitional work reveals the foundations beneath his later innovations. The work in a private collection.
