by Raoul Dufy, 1934
Raoul Dufy painted this vibrant scene in 1934, capturing a yacht regatta on the Isle of Wight. Colorful nautical flags rise up masts against a brilliant blue sky, while white sails dot the sparkling water. The composition bursts with the energy of boats, bunting, and summer light.
Dufy made the painting while staying at a hotel in Cowes, observing the annual regatta that has drawn sailing enthusiasts since the 19th century. He used bold horizontal brushstrokes for the water and quick, calligraphic marks for the flags and rigging. Each flag shows a different pattern: stripes, checkers, the Union Jack.
The work demonstrates Dufy's mature style, which combined Fauvist color with decorative elegance. He signed and dated it "Cowes 1934 Raoul Dufy" in the lower left corner. It now hangs at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
