by Rembrandt van Rijn, 1654
Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn painted this Diana bathing in 1654, showing the goddess in a naturalistic nude. The figure's soft flesh and rounded form differ from idealized classical nudes.
Rembrandt's realistic approach was controversial. This work has been in the Louvre's collection since 1857.
