Rembrandt van Rijn portrays Jan Cornelisz Sylvius, a prominent Amsterdam preacher and relative of Rembrandt's wife Saskia. The portrait captures the preacher in a moment of animated speech, his hand gesturing as if delivering a sermon with passionate conviction.
Rembrandt created multiple portraits and prints of Sylvius, who baptized several of his children. The work is recreated in the Rembrandt House Museum in Amsterdam.
