Rembrandt van Rijn portrays an elderly woman believed to be his mother, Neeltgen Willemsdochter van Zuytbrouck. The painting shows her in contemplative mood, her weathered face illuminated by gentle light that emphasizes her age and character.
Rembrandt painted his mother several times, using her as a model for studies of age and expression. The work is recreated in its original setting at the Rembrandt House Museum in Amsterdam.
