Rembrandt van Rijn painted his father Harmen as an elderly man with a beard and fur-trimmed coat. The intimate portrait shows Rembrandt's early mastery of characterization and his lifelong interest in depicting old age.
This painting was stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston in 1990, part of the largest art theft in history. Thirteen works valued at $500 million were taken, and none have been recovered. Empty frames still hang where the paintings once were, awaiting their return.
