Vincent van Gogh completed this somber scene in 1880, showing miners trudging through snow in the predawn darkness. The work dates from his time in the Borinage mining region of Belgium, where he lived among coal miners as a lay preacher. Van Gogh's dark palette and heavy forms convey the harsh reality of working-class life.
This early painting shows Van Gogh's social conscience and identification with laborers before he developed his famous colorful style. The muted tones reflect Dutch traditions and his emotional state during this difficult period. Now at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, this work reveals his artistic beginnings.
