The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam houses the world's largest collection of works by Vincent van Gogh, comprising over 200 paintings, 500 drawings, and 750 personal letters. The collection remained in family hands after Vincent's death in 1890, passing to his brother Theo, then to Theo's widow Johanna van Gogh-Bonger, and finally to their son Vincent Willem. In 1962, Vincent Willem founded the Van Gogh Foundation to preserve the collection, and the museum opened on June 2, 1973.
Dutch architect Gerrit Rietveld designed the main building, completed after his death. Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa added an exhibition wing in 1999. The collection traces Van Gogh's entire artistic development, from early dark works like Miners in the Snow to the vibrant masterpieces of his final years: Bedroom in Arles, Café Terrace at Night, Almond Blossoms, and The Yellow House. The letters between Vincent and Theo provide unprecedented insight into an artist's creative process. The museum sits on Museumplein, alongside the Rijksmuseum and Stedelijk Museum. Advance ticket booking is required.
