William-Adolphe Bouguereau completed this pastoral scene of idealized figures in a classical landscape. Beautiful youths relax in an Arcadian setting, embodying 19th-century academic ideals of beauty. Bouguereau's flawless technique and smooth finish made him the most successful French academic painter of his era.
His mythological and pastoral subjects were enormously popular with collectors. The porcelain-like flesh and careful composition demonstrate academic mastery. This painting remains in a private collection.
