Antico (c. 1460-1528), born Pier Jacopo Alari Bonacolsi, was a Mantuan sculptor who specialized in classically inspired small bronzes for the Gonzaga court. His nickname means "the antique one," reflecting his deep engagement with ancient Roman sculpture.
Antico's partially gilded bronzes of mythological figures are prized for their superb surface finish and archaeological sensitivity. He often cast multiple versions for different patrons, each finished to the highest standard.
