Arturo Di Modica (1941-2021) was a Sicilian-American sculptor who created the Charging Bull (1989), the bronze sculpture that has become the unofficial symbol of Wall Street and American financial ambition. Born in Vittoria, Sicily, he moved to New York in 1973.
Di Modica spent two years and $350,000 of his own money casting the 7,100-pound bull, then installed it guerrilla-style outside the New York Stock Exchange one December night in 1989 as a gift to New Yorkers. Police towed it away, but public outcry forced the city to reinstall it nearby on Broadway. It's now one of the most photographed sculptures in New York.
