Gerard David (c. 1460–1523) was the last great master of the Bruges school, closing out a golden century of Flemish painting. Born in Oudewater in the Netherlands, he trained under Albert van Ouwater in Haarlem before moving to Bruges in 1483. He joined the Guild of Saint Luke in 1484, and when Hans Memling died in 1494, David became the city's leading painter. He served as dean of the guild in 1501.
David's mature style blends the detailed naturalism of the Northern Renaissance with a softer, more atmospheric quality. His brushwork creates rich, saturated colors and gentle gradations of light that give his religious scenes a meditative stillness. Among his most notable works are The Judgment of Cambyses (1498), a brutal pair of panels showing a corrupt judge being flayed alive, painted for Bruges town hall. His triptych Baptism of Christ (c. 1502–07) and the Madonna with Angels and Saints (1509), painted without commission for the Carmelite nuns, rank among the finest Flemish altarpieces ever created.
David's name vanished from art history after his death. In 1866, William Henry James Weale discovered documents in the Bruges archives that brought the painter back to light. A landmark 1902 exhibition at the Gruuthuse Museum restored his reputation. Today his works hang at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Louvre, the National Gallery in London, and the Museo del Prado.
