by Gerard David
Gerard David depicted Christ's first miracle in this sumptuous painting of the Marriage at Cana. The biblical scene shows Jesus transforming water into wine at a wedding feast, with elegantly dressed guests seated around tables laden with food and drink. David's detailed rendering of fabrics, metalwork, and still-life details demonstrates the finest Flemish technique.
David worked in Bruges at the end of its golden era as a center of Flemish painting, continuing the traditions of van Eyck and Memling with refined precision. His religious scenes combine spiritual depth with careful observation of material luxury. The painting now hangs at the Louvre in Paris, whose Northern Renaissance galleries include major works from the Netherlandish schools.
