
Jean-Joseph Carriès (1855-1894) was a French sculptor and ceramicist who became a pioneer of art pottery. He abandoned conventional bronze sculpture for stoneware ceramics, creating grotesque faces, masks, and fantastic creatures in richly glazed surfaces. His work influenced Art Nouveau ceramics.
