Richard Serra (1938-2024) was an American sculptor known for his massive steel installations that transform the spaces they occupy. Born in San Francisco, he studied at Yale before emerging in the late 1960s as one of the most important process and minimalist artists. His mature work consists of enormous curved and tilted steel plates, often weighing hundreds of tons.
Serra's sculptures demand physical engagement. Walking through pieces like Torqued Ellipses or The Matter of Time creates a visceral experience of enclosure, weight, and shifting perspective that can't be captured in photographs. His public installations sparked both admiration and controversy, notably the Tilted Arc in New York, which was removed after a public hearing in 1989. Our collection includes 3 works at the Olympic Sculpture Park in Seattle.
