The Olympic Sculpture Park opened in Seattle on January 20, 2007, operated by the Seattle Art Museum. The 8.5-acre site was formerly an industrial fuel storage yard for the Unocal oil company, and the museum converted the contaminated waterfront brownfield into a free, open-air park with support from a $30 million donation by Jon and Mary Shirley.
The park displays roughly 20 permanent outdoor sculptures alongside rotating temporary works. Highlights include Wake, Richard Serra's massive weathering-steel plates, and Alexander Calder's red steel Eagle.
Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen's oversized Typewriter Eraser, Scale X and Jaume Plensa's illuminated head sculpture Echo round out a collection built around large-scale contemporary works viewed against Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains.
