Robert Indiana (1928-2018) was an American artist best known for his iconic LOVE sculpture, one of the most recognized images in modern art. Born Robert Clark in New Castle, Indiana, he took his home state's name as his surname. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, Skowhegan School, and Edinburgh College of Art before settling in New York in 1954.
Indiana's work combined bold, graphic text and numbers with Pop Art sensibility. The LOVE design first appeared as a painting in 1966 and as a U.S. postage stamp in 1973. His painted steel LOVE sculptures now stand in cities from New York to Tokyo. He later created a HOPE version for Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign.
