Robert Therrien (1947-2019) was an American sculptor known for oversized replicas of everyday objects: tables and chairs scaled up to make adults feel child-sized, massive stacked plates, and towering Dutch doors. Born in Chicago and based in Los Angeles, he studied at the Brooks Institute and USC.
Therrien's work shares DNA with Pop Art's interest in the ordinary but takes a more surreal, psychological approach. Standing beneath his 10-foot-tall table and chairs creates a disorienting bodily experience rather than a visual joke. His work appeared in the Whitney Biennial and at major international exhibitions throughout his career.
