Wilhelm Schimmel (1817-1890) was a German-born folk artist who carved painted wooden eagles and animals in Pennsylvania's Cumberland Valley. A wandering craftsman, he traded his brightly painted carvings for food and lodging. His fierce, stylized eagles with spread wings are now prized icons of American folk art.
