The Alte Nationalgalerie traces its founding to 1861, when Berlin banker Johann Heinrich Wagener donated 262 paintings to the Prussian state. Architect Friedrich August Stüler designed the temple-like building on Museum Island, and construction, overseen after his death by Carl Busse and Heinrich Strack, finished in 1876.
The gallery's holdings trace German art through the 19th century, from Caspar David Friedrich's Romantic landscapes to the early modernism of Adolph Menzel, alongside French Impressionists like Manet and Monet. Menzel is represented by two of his most industrious works, The Iron Rolling Mill, a scene of laborers inside a steel plant, and The Flute Concert of Frederick the Great, a candlelit court scene set a century before Menzel's own time.
Set on Museum Island alongside four sister institutions, the Alte Nationalgalerie remains the place to see how German painting moved from Romanticism to the edge of the twentieth century.

Alte Nationalgalerie focuses on 19th-century art including German Romanticism, French Impressionism, and early modernism. Gemäldegalerie covers Old Masters from 13th-18th centuries. Both are essential for art lovers but serve different periods.
If you plan to visit 2 or more Museum Island museums, the day pass (€22) saves money over individual tickets. The Alte Nationalgalerie alone is €12. The Pergamon and Neues Museum are equally impressive.
