Realist painter Adolph Menzel (1815-1905) became Germany's most celebrated 19th-century artist through his meticulous observation and innovative techniques. Born in Breslau (now Wrocław, Poland), he moved to Berlin at 15 and took over his father's lithographic business at 17. Largely self-taught after brief Academy study, Menzel developed extraordinary skills in rendering light and atmosphere that anticipated Impressionism.
His 400 illustrations for Franz Kugler's History of Frederick the Great (1839-42) established his reputation, while paintings like The Iron Rolling Mill (1875) captured industrial modernity with unprecedented realism. Menzel treated workers with dignity, showing physical labor without romanticizing it. His Room with a Balcony (1845) anticipated Impressionist light effects by decades. Knighted in 1898, he became the first painter admitted to the Order of the Black Eagle. Today the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin holds the largest collection of his work, while the Neue Pinakothek in Munich displays significant paintings. The J. Paul Getty Museum also preserves examples of his draftsmanship.
