The Alte Nationalgalerie opened in 1876 on Berlin's Museum Island, originating from banker Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Wagener's 1861 bequest of 262 works. Director Hugo von Tschudi made it the first museum in the world to purchase Impressionist art, acquiring Manet and Monet in 1896.
Today the museum preserves around 3,500 paintings and sculptures covering the entire 19th century, from classicism and Romanticism to early modernism. Severely damaged during World War II, it underwent thorough renovation between 1998 and 2001, reuniting East and West collections for the first time since Berlin's division. Our collection includes works by Adolph Menzel and Arnold Böcklin.
