The Clark Art Institute opened in 1955 in rural Williamstown, Massachusetts, far from the East Coast museums where collectors Sterling and Francine Clark originally expected their collection to reside. Cold War fears of nuclear attack on New York prompted their search for a safer location. The resulting museum combines an intimate gallery experience with serious art historical scholarship through its research library and graduate program affiliated with Williams College.
French Impressionism defines the collection, with over 30 paintings by Pierre-Auguste Renoir forming one of the finest holdings anywhere. Works by Degas, Mary Cassatt, and Monet fill adjacent galleries. Bouguereau's Nymphs and Satyr represents the academic tradition the Impressionists rejected. American painters including Winslow Homer and John Singer Sargent provide counterpoint. Tadao Ando's 2014 visitor center added concrete and reflecting pools to the wooded campus.
Bring luxury art into your home with gallery-worthy canvas prints.
