Impressionist painter Mary Cassatt (1844-1926) became the only American to exhibit with the French Impressionists, earning acclaim for her innovative depictions of mothers and children. Born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania to a wealthy family, she studied at the Pennsylvania Academy before moving to Paris in 1866. Edgar Degas invited her to exhibit with the Impressionists in 1879, beginning a friendship that profoundly shaped both artists' work.
Cassatt's subjects focused on the private lives of women, particularly the intimate bonds between mothers and children. Works like The Child's Bath (1893) show her mastery of composition and her ability to portray tender moments without sentimentality. She also created pioneering color prints influenced by Japanese woodblocks. Never married herself, she depicted motherhood with remarkable psychological insight. Cassatt advised American collectors, helping build the Impressionist collections now in US museums. Her work hangs at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, and the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
