The Delaware Art Museum in Wilmington was founded in 1912 to honor illustrator Howard Pyle, who taught at his studio in Wilmington. The museum holds the most comprehensive collection of Pre-Raphaelite art in the United States, assembled by collector Samuel Bancroft Jr.
Rossetti, Burne-Jones, and Ford Madox Brown anchor the British holdings, while the American illustration collection includes works by Pyle, N.C. Wyeth, and Maxfield Parrish. The museum also holds strong collections of American painting and contemporary art. A sculpture garden and nine acres of parkland surround the building.
