The Kunstmuseum Den Haag, formerly Gemeentemuseum, holds the world's largest collection of works by Piet Mondrian, with nearly 300 pieces spanning every phase of his career. The collection began taking shape in 1951 when collector Sal Slijper donated Mondrian works, establishing the museum as the artist's spiritual home. Victory Boogie Woogie, Mondrian's final unfinished masterpiece from 1944, anchors the collection. The Dutch government purchased it controversially for €35 million in 1997. Too fragile to travel, it will never leave the building.
Dutch architect H.P. Berlage designed the museum between 1931 and 1935, choosing ordinary brick over marble to invite visitors rather than intimidate them. The building itself embodies De Stijl principles of geometric clarity. A dedicated Mondrian & De Stijl wing opened in 2011, designed by artist Krijn de Koning and architect Anne Holtrop. Works by De Stijl founders Theo van Doesburg, Bart van der Leck, and Gerrit Rietveld complement the Mondrian holdings. Beyond abstract art, the museum also displays Dutch Old Masters including Jan Steen and an extensive fashion and decorative arts collection.
