The Mauritshuis in The Hague presents Dutch Golden Age painting in the intimate setting of a 17th-century canal-side mansion. Johan Maurits of Nassau-Siegen built this classical residence in the 1640s, right beside the Binnenhof where the Dutch parliament still meets. The Royal Cabinet of Paintings, established in 1822, took residence here and has since assembled one of the finest concentrations of Dutch and Flemish Old Masters anywhere. The collection numbers over 800 works spanning 1400 to 1800.
Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring, often called the "Mona Lisa of the North," draws visitors from around the world. The painting entered the collection in 1902 through a bequest, having sold at auction in 1881 for just two guilders. Rembrandt's Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp and View of Delft by Vermeer rank among other treasures. Jan Steen's comic scenes, Gerard ter Borch's elegant interiors, and Paulus Potter's life-sized bull complete the picture of Dutch 17th-century mastery.
