The Centre Pompidou revolutionized museum architecture when it opened in 1977, turning the building inside out by placing mechanical systems on the exterior. President Georges Pompidou initiated the project in 1969, envisioning a major cultural center in the Beaubourg district. Architects Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers won the competition with a radical design featuring color-coded external tubes: blue for air, green for water, yellow for electrical, and red for circulation. The controversial building faced fierce opposition but became one of Paris's most visited attractions.
The Musée National d'Art Moderne inside holds Europe's largest collection of modern and contemporary art, with over 120,000 works. Henri Matisse, Picasso, Kandinsky, and Duchamp are comprehensively represented. The collection spans every major 20th-century movement from Fauvism through contemporary installation art. The public library on the second floor is free to enter and draws as many visitors as the museum itself.
