The Hospital de la Caridad in Seville was founded in 1674 by Miguel de Mañara, a nobleman who devoted his fortune to caring for the city's abandoned sick and burying the dead. Mañara began construction in 1672 and personally devised the church's artistic program, hiring the finest painters in Seville.
Bartolomé Esteban Murillo painted eight canvases for the church in 1668, illustrating acts of mercy. Valdés Leal contributed two unforgettable vanitas paintings: Finis Gloriae Mundi and In Ictu Oculi, among the most haunting images in Spanish Baroque art. Pedro Roldán carved the main altarpiece. The hospital still operates today, caring for the elderly and infirm as Mañara intended.
