The Museo de Bellas Artes de Sevilla ranks as Spain's second most important art museum after the Prado. Established in 1835 following the dissolution of monasteries, it occupies the former Convent of La Merced Calzada, a 17th-century building with three patios decorated with Andalusian tiles. The collection draws heavily from suppressed religious institutions, giving it exceptional depth in Sevillian Baroque painting from the city's 17th-century golden age.
Murillo dominates Room 5, the former convent church, with altarpieces including his famous Inmaculada Colosal. Zurbarán's austere monastic scenes occupy Room 10, while Valdés Leal's dramatic compositions fill adjacent galleries. Works by Velázquez teacher Francisco Pacheco and sculptor Juan Martínez Montañés document the artistic community that made Seville a center of Spanish art. A bronze statue of Murillo stands in the plaza outside.
