Manchester Art Gallery was founded in 1882 when the Manchester Corporation acquired the Royal Manchester Institution's buildings and collections, originally established in 1823. The museum houses over 25,000 objects, with particular strength in Victorian art and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.
The fine art collection includes 2,000 oil paintings, 3,000 watercolors, 250 sculptures, and 1,000 prints. Our collection features works by William Holman Hunt, Ford Madox Brown, and Edmund Blair Leighton. The gallery remains one of the best places in England to see 19th-century British painting and decorative arts.
