The Musée d'Art Moderne de Céret in the French Pyrenees was founded in 1950 in the village where Picasso, Braque, and Juan Gris worked during seminal summers between 1910 and 1913, helping to develop Cubism.
The collection holds works donated by the artists themselves and their descendants: Picasso alone gave 57 ceramic bowls decorated with bullfighting scenes. Matisse, Chagall, and Soutine are also represented. The museum's Catalan setting, in a town known as the "Mecca of Cubism," gives context to the revolutionary work that was created here in the years before World War I.
