The Musée Magnin in Dijon occupies a 17th-century hôtel particulier on the Rue des Bons Enfants. The collection was assembled by Maurice Magnin and his sister Jeanne, both passionate art collectors who bequeathed their house and 2,000 works to the French state in 1938.
The Magnins favored lesser-known artists and unfashionable periods, giving the collection an unusual character: minor masters of the Italian Baroque, French 17th-century painting, and Northern European works. The house-museum atmosphere, with paintings hung salon-style in period-furnished rooms, preserves the taste of two discerning collectors who never sought the obvious masterpiece.
