The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dijon is housed in the Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy, one of France's grandest civic buildings. The museum opened in 1787, making it one of the oldest in France. The Dukes' tombs and their carved mourner figures are the signature attraction, but the painting collection covers six centuries of European art, from medieval Burgundian panels to 19th-century French works.
The collection includes Robert Campin's Adoration of Shepherds, Lorenzo Lotto's delicate portraiture, and a Pontormo St. Sebastian. The Northern Renaissance and Flemish holdings are particularly strong, reflecting Burgundy's historic ties to the Low Countries. Entry is free. After a decade-long renovation completed in 2019, the galleries are beautifully restored.
