The Museum Mayer van den Bergh in Antwerp preserves the collection of Fritz Mayer van den Bergh (1858-1901), a connoisseur who died at 42 after amassing a remarkable collection of medieval and Renaissance art. His mother opened the museum in 1904 in a purpose-built neo-Gothic house.
The star of the collection is Pieter Bruegel the Elder's Dulle Griet (Mad Meg, c. 1563), acquired by Mayer van den Bergh at auction for a fraction of its value because nobody recognized it. The museum also holds medieval sculpture, illuminated manuscripts, and a notable group of 16th-century Antwerp paintings.
