Musée Royal des Beaux-Arts

The Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp was founded in 1810 and moved into its current neoclassical building, designed by Jean-Jacques Winders and Frans Van Dijk, between 1884 and 1894. The museum closed for renovation in 2011 and reopened in September 2022.

The collection focuses on Early Netherlandish and Flemish painting from the 14th to the 20th century, with major holdings of Rubens and Van Dyck. Earlier Flemish masters are represented by Hans Memling's Portrait of a Man with a Roman Coin (1480) and Joachim Patinir's Landscape with the Flight into Egypt (1520), an early example of landscape treated as the true subject of a religious scene.

The museum's holdings also include Jan van Eyck's Saint Barbara and Rogier van der Weyden's Seven Sacraments Altarpiece, reflecting Antwerp's central role in Northern European painting since the 15th century.
