The Church of Santa Maria del Carmine in Florence's Oltrarno district is famous for the Brancacci Chapel (separately listed), whose Masaccio and Masolino frescoes are among the most important in Western art. The Carmelite church was largely rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1771.
The fire spared the Brancacci Chapel and the Corsini Chapel, which contains a Baroque ceiling fresco by Luca Giordano. The church's plain exterior belies the artistic treasures within. The Carmelite convent adjacent to the church has a long history dating to the 13th century, when the order first established itself in Florence.
