Adriaen Brouwer rendered this lively tavern scene around 1625, when he was barely twenty. Peasants gather in a dimly lit inn, drinking, smoking, and engaged in rowdy conversation. Brouwer captured their unvarnished expressions with notable psychological insight, presenting figures neither idealized nor mocked.
Brouwer worked in both Flanders and the Dutch Republic, and both Rubens and Rembrandt collected his paintings. His tavern scenes influenced countless artists, from David Teniers to Adriaen van Ostade. Despite dying at just 32, he produced an influential body of small-scale Baroque genre paintings. This work hangs at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam.
