by Jan Steen
Jan Steen painted A Village Wedding in 1653, depicting a lively peasant celebration. The oil on canvas measures 64 x 81 cm and captures the festive chaos Steen became famous for. Revelers dance, drink, and celebrate with the boisterous energy typical of his work.
Unlike many Dutch painters who portrayed wealthy patrons, Steen captured common people enjoying themselves, usually with humor and implied moral lessons. His paintings often show what became known as a "Jan Steen household," meaning cheerful disorder.
The painting hangs at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam.
