This painting by Pieter de Hooch tavern scene around 1652, early in his career before his famous courtyard paintings. A maid attempts to fill a cavalier's empty glass while card players gather in the background. Warm light streams through the space, illuminating the figures.
De Hooch began by painting these rowdy tavern scenes, known as kortegardje (from the French corps de garde). His expert chiaroscuro creates depth and intimacy. It is also called "The Empty Glass." Now at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam.
