Akseli Gallen-Kallela executed this Lemminkäinen's Mother, depicting a scene from the Finnish national epic Kalevala. The mother has retrieved her son's dismembered body from the River of Death and attempts to restore him to life. The stark landscape and emotional intensity capture the mythic power of the tale.
Gallen-Kallela became Finland's national painter through his Kalevala illustrations, which combined Symbolist style with Finnish mythology. This painting helped establish Finnish cultural identity during the struggle for independence from Russia. It hangs at the Finnish National Gallery in Helsinki.
