Akseli Gallen-Kallela painted the view of Helsinki's North Quay, capturing the Finnish capital's waterfront. Ships and buildings line the harbor in this urban landscape that shows the artist's connection to his homeland. The atmospheric rendering suggests changing weather over the Baltic waters.
While best known for mythological paintings from the Kalevala, Gallen-Kallela also documented Finnish scenes. This work shows his naturalistic observation of daily life in Helsinki. Displayed at the Helsinki City Museum.
