Camille Pissarro painted the Marne River at Chennevières, capturing the landscape of the Île-de-France region. The scene shows the riverbank with its reflections, rendered in Pissarro's careful brushwork.
Pissarro was the eldest of the Impressionists and the only one to exhibit in all eight group shows. His patient mentoring helped younger painters including Cézanne and Gauguin find their directions. This work hangs at the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh.
